A "vignette" --from Il Manifesto (22 August 1997)

Nevio Rossi, an ardent supporter of the post-fascist party Alleanza Nazionale, is very unhappy that he resides in a street named "Via Gramsci." He asked the mayor of his town, Foiano della Chiana, to change the street name.

"I have nothing against the communist party ideologue," Rossi explained, "but, given my ideas, I would prefer to live on street named for, let us say, Mussolini."

Unfortunately for Nevio Rossi, the mayor of Foiano della Chiesa belongs to the Democratic Party of the Left (PDS) and the town is overwhelmingly "red".

The unhappy Rossi has virtually no chance of living on a street with an agreeable name: the other streets of the small town are Via della Resistenza, Via Martiri della Libertà, and Via Matteotti!   ^ return to top ^ < prev | toc | next >
