Gramsci on the World Wide Web

The Growth of Marxist Writings on the Web

Marcus E. Green

Within the last year, the Marxists Internet Archive has grown substantially. It now contains sixty-two English archives by various Marxists writers and a variety of archives in twenty-three different languages. In addition to its textual holdings, MIA contains a section on Marxist history, a subject index, an encyclopedia of Marxism, and several study guides. MIA is a useful point of reference for activists, academics, students, and those who are new to Marxist politics and philosophy. The Marx and Engels Archive is especially useful for those who do not have access to Marx/Engels Collected Works. The Archive now includes the contents and major portions of text from forty-seven of the forty-nine volumes of the Collected Works, including the text from of three volumes of Capital.

The Antonio Gramsci Internet Archive (GIA)
The Gramsci Internet Archive is one of the many archives hosted by MIA. GIA contains many of Gramsci's political and prison writings in Danish, Spanish, and English. Currently the Danish section of the Archive contains six of Gramsci's pre-prison writings and nineteen prison notes, and the Spanish section of the Archive contains seven of Gramsci's pre-prison writings. The English section is the largest portion of GIA. It contains "An Introduction to Gramsci's Life and Thought" by Frank Rosengarten, seven of Gramsci's writings from 1916 to 1920, approximately forty entries from Selections from Political Writings 1921-1926 (translated and edited by Quintin Hoare), and currently GIA is in the process of including English translations of the critical edition of the prison notebooks. The project of including the text of all twenty-nine notebooks may be very a long process and require the work of many volunteers, but it will allow Gramsci's work to be readily available to all internet users.
